Rum Old Fashioned

Set sail for flavor adventure with the Rum Old Fashioned! This recipe takes the familiar warmth and complexity of the classic Old Fashioned and infuses it with the sunshine spirit of rum. Imagine the rich, molasses notes of aged rum mingling with the subtle sweetness of sugar and the aromatic embrace of bitters. The result? A deeply satisfying cocktail that evokes the laid-back vibes of a tropical island.

Whether you prefer a dark rum for a deeper, more caramelized flavor, or a lighter option that lets the citrus notes shine through, this recipe is your guide to crafting the perfect Rum Old Fashioned.

Ingredients

  • 2 fluid ounces dark rum
  • ¼ fluid ounce simple syrup
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Orange peel, for garnish
  • Ice, large cube

Measurement Conversions: 1 fl oz = 1 shot = 30ml

How To Make

  • Add simple syrup and bitters to a glass.
  • Add ice and stir to combine.
  • Add rum and stir until well chilled.
  • Express the oil of an orange peel by twisting over the glass, then drop into the glass to garnish.

Notes

  • Rum - Dark rum is a rich, full-bodied styled rum having been aged in oak barrels. They take on some of the flavor from the barrels, including vanilla and caramel.
  • Simple syrup consists of equal amounts of white sugar and water. Combine sugar and water in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Stir to dissolve the sugar and cook until the mixture is slightly thickened. Cool before using.
